I've been very busy over the last few months. I have, at the very least, a chapbook coming out sometime this fall. It will be a hard back version of SWEET THINGS that was a pb free giveaway that accompanied my novella, BOOGALOOS, last year. It seems there have been requests for the chapbook. So, it will have a new story inside that I wrote this year, accompanying the original two. There will likely be a collection or novel set for next year, as well as digital novel/novella.

I'm working on one novella right now called 'Not Quite Right' as well as a novel that will be sent to agents early next year. There's also a couple of new novels sitting in first draft on my shelf.

I'm also learning a lot of new things that have to do with Internet Marketing and Web Development. And in the fall I'll be adding a bunch of new courses that will redirect me to the new world of digital books. I'm already putting together a portfolio of book covers and website designs that I've done recently under the name of 'Black Sky Design Works.'

Anyway, back to the novella and I'll be back a lot sooner for updates. And if you like to hear the updates before anyone else, drop me a line and you will get my quarterly newsletter.

Doug

REUNION Review

Hello everyone,

I won't say too much today about my life in Victoria BC. Other than it's moving along very well. More info about that in the next week or two.

Rather I would like to post a review I did on a little book from Postscript Publishing in the UK. They put out a book recently from one of my favourite authors: Rick Hautala. You see, this guy has a lot of books out there, tons of short stories and a few screenplays. (Including some Buffy tales for those who loved that show) Anyway, I have been reading and collecting his stuff since his short story compilation BEDBUGS. (He also has another called OCCASIONAL DEMONS on the way from Cemetery Dance Publications) And of course the last book I really liked a lot of his was WILDMAN.

However, this blog is about his newest release: REUNION from Postscripts. And having read it yesterday in it's entirety here's my review.

Having just read Robert McCammon’s Boy’s Life when I received REUNION in the mail, I decided to take a rest and read something else. Something completely different. But, just like any book of Rick’s I buy, it kept singing for me to come take a peek.

So, I heeded the call and picked up the book today.

Let me state something here before I go on. Being a writer myself, I usually read to learn from others. And, it is a rare event that a book will lead me away from my learning mode, but this tome did just that. And I’m more than happy that it did.

Though the book is slight in size (105 pages), make no mistake, it has as much heart and thoughtfulness as any of the other well-known coming-of-age books. This book should be right at the top of everyone’s TBR pile.

Not only is Rick’s writing wonderful, smooth and truthful, it flows like a ghost through an unkempt cemetery. It didn’t take me long to get hooked, and I knew immediately where and about what time-period the story was situated in. You see, I am one of those on the other side of fifty. However, like Boy’s Life, don’t think you need to be in that age bracket to enjoy or become immersed in the tale. It’s terrific for anyone who remembers what it’s like to grow up with wonderment and curiosity.

I know Rick has mentioned that if you liked his short story Miss Henry’s Bottles, you’ll like this one. I agree. But more than that. This narrative needs no crutches to help it along. It stands all by itself just fine, thank you very much.

Not only is this a coming-of-age tale but it wanders into the mist of what I loosely term as science fiction/fantasy as well. As I said earlier, I had just finished reading Boy’s Life when REUNION came in the mail. And now that I’ve read this, it’s a fantastic story to cap off my month of reading coming-of-age stories. Though this tome is slight, the story is not.

Don’t wait to buy this. There weren't many printed. So, order it now before it’s too late. You won’t be disappointed.

http://store.pspublishing.co.uk/acatalog/info_471.html ($20.00 HB)

http://store.pspublishing.co.uk/acatalog/info_472.html ($40.00 HB)

And I believe right now you can order 3 different books for one low price at Postscripts Publishing.

BEEN BUSY

I'll be back here down the road. I am in deep gratitude to you all. And for everyone out there who don't know me, and the ones that met me only at the convention in Toronto, I am more than thrilled you either bought the book or at least promoted me. Their small press published many stories of mine in Black Ink Horror, but notably they published BOOGALOOS, THE GHOST STORY OF ‘79: THE LOST CHAPTER & the pre-order accompanying chapbook, SWEET THINGS. A round of applause has to go out to them. A short one. I have arrived in Victoria and now putting my life and writing life in order. I am quite certain I will be happy living here the rest of my days.

As for the writing life ~ I have gone back to my rewriting of a book that Nancy Kilpatrick had edited a few years ago. So, that, I hope will be the follow up to BOOGALOOS. It too is supernatural, but also a thriller. Speaking of BOOGALOOS, the TP is coming out in a couple weeks and the HB to follow. So, by the end of November everyone will hopefully have their copy. Feel free to write and let me know your thoughts, not only on BOOGALOOS, but on the FREE chapbook SWEET THINGS as well.

I should mention that the HORROR MALL has removed the link to buy copies from their site. So, guys and dolls, those who have purchased my first published long fiction piece, you have the first edition and there will be no more unless another publisher wants to reprint it. Nonetheless, you have the first signed editions as well as the first edition. Of both novella and chapbook.

Okay - time to go to my website to reflect these changes. Talk to you all soon.

And another round of thanks to all that purchased BOOGALOOS!

Doug

GETTING THERE

Hey Everyone,

Now that the end of pre-ordering Boogaloos has come and gone, I think you can still order for a little while. The difference being you will be put on a 'first come' list and the chapbook will not be signed. Possibly, Boogaloos won't be signed either. But we had a couple months to do so, didn't we? lol

So, at the moment I have the signature sheets and am also packing to move. Yep, I am heading to the great green south. It's winter in the Yukon and I've tired of it already. I've been heating my place for the last 3 weeks.

Anyway, chances are it will be awhile before I update my website. I've finally got back into reading again. Haven't really done that since August. I returned to Boys' Life and it didn't seem I had left the book at all. Every bit of it came flooding back. What a great book! This and Jeff Strand's Pressure are my favourite reads of this year.

And to add to that, my writing is moving along very slowly, but once I get back to where winter is much shorter, my creativity, I think, will also return.

So guys and dolls - have a great Halloween and talk to you all when I am finally settled elsewhere.

Doug

HOMEWARD BOUND

Just a short note people. A little more uplifting than the last. Though, I have lots ahead of me, I think I will be moving back to Victoria BC by the end of the year. This will likely be my last move, seeing I am not with Canada Post anymore, but there are so many positive things on the horizon for me. New outlook, the chance for new opportunities and a new book that I am working on. I seem to have gained a little time since my surprise retirement, so it's time for me, old friends, relatives and new friends.

One of the most positive aspects of my latest visit to Victoria is the meeting of a woman I've known for some time. Her name is Cat and hopefully our relationship will only grow in the coming months. She's such a wonderful positive person. I couldn't ask for more.

Anyway. just a reminder, BOOGALOOS will be released at the end of this month. Better grab a letter and fly into the unknown before it's too late.

Talk to you all later.

Doug

HEADING SOUTH

Yep folks, that's what's going to happen. Heading to Victoria at the end of the month. Can hardly wait. I am meeting old friends and new ones too.

Anyway, this note will be short.

Have been busy at work and will be busier in the next couple weeks. On the BOOGALOOS front, not much to report. However, I have left the Barracuda novel and moved to one that was started a long time ago. I hope to have the next draft or two done by October. About the time BOOGALOOS will be released and mailed to all those who have ordered.

Last weekend I spent countless hours scrubbing clean my website. But I wasn't able to get rid of what the hackers had done. So, I ended up deleting the whole site and starting over. There was a lot of HTML code sewn into everything, including the JPEGS. Once I dumped the old site, and there were a few pictures I had stored there that vanished forever, I was able to go back a year or so and reinstall. However, the BOOGALOOS page was lost completely. So, I had to make a new one. Also the stories page was lost. And I still haven't returned all the FREE fiction yet. But, I will.

I also started a completely new site, but that won't be online until next year. Anyway, if you've ever been to my website, there's a character in the upper right corner. It is the vision of Deena Warner of a character in a book that I am now rewriting. It's about time I brought him to life.

Don't you think?

Cya next time.

Doug

ALL SUNSHINY

Well folks,

The sun has finally come out tonight. It's 9 pm and everything looks cool and summery. I've started a new story for a contest and it has to be done in a couple days.

Whoo-hoo!

If it doesn't win, at least I have a new one out looking for a neighborhood to invade. I have been thinking of all kinds of things lately. Not worldly stuff. Nope not me. Just stuff like how and when will I leave the Yukon. As for the BOOGALOOS front, I received a new drawing from one talented Tom Moran. It is the pen and ink for the BOOGALOOS Deluxe Edition. This one will be enhancing The Lost Chapter: The Ghost Story of '79. And it's a fabulous rendering of the tale. One thing I can say is that this book will be the proudest achievement of mine to date. One always things the story you are working on as the greatest, and that's really true, but BOOGALOOS is a story by all means that shouldn't even exist.

It started out as something because I couldn't think of a tale from beginning to end. It took more than a month, I guess, to write the damned thing. I just kept adding line by line. By the end of it, I hated every word, every sentence and every paragraph. When I was feeling lonely and desperate for some kind word about my life I sent it to my pal, Louise Bohmer. As I've said in the past, she loved it. Actually, I think she loved the talking rat; however, I am sorry to say it's gone. But, there is still something in the text, a ghost of itself, just for Louise.

So, as I was saying earlier, I was thinking on when and how I will leave here for the south. Not that it matters much really. In time, I will be patrolling the southern Canadian hemisphere, closer to my writing buddies and a lot closer to the land of creativity.

IN THE SUMMERTIME

Yes kids,

It's summertime in the Yukon. Actually, it's been a fantastic summer here. The weather has been hot (over 30 at times) and very little rain. According to friends back home in Ontario, I am having a better summer than they are. Always nice to hear seeing we have about 6 or 7 months of winter!

I still have lotsa renovating to do and if the market recovers then I will look at moving back down south. That's British Columbia to my American friends.

One thing I love about the Yukon and northern B.C. is the scenery and wildlife. When I am driving I come across everything from Bison to mountain goats (sheep). The lakes are mainly bermuda green and the waterfalls and high and wondrous. There still is gold mining going on and the claims are not just large corporations, but small one person works as well.

Anyway, it still looks like there are some copies left of BOOGALOOS. If you like one before they are sold out, you should just hop onto my website and order one from the Horror Mall.

As for the moment, I am writing a soft science-fiction/ horror story. I think it will be another novella length feature. It's not done so there is no publisher attached to it at the moment. But, I figure in a month or so, I will be shipping it around so it can find a new home.

But for the moment, I will bid you so long and will be back in a couple days.

Doug

BOOGALOOS HARDBACK SELLOUT

Just a short one people,

Yes folks, that's right. Though, they are done, I am going to be rereading the manuscript very soon to be sure it's everything Sideshow Press is looking for in the book. I have a couple new projects on the go as well; but it's way to early to discuss them. However, on my FaceBook page there's a link to Louise Bohmer's blog where she mentions Boogaloos, Sweet Things and a touch of Susie Moloney. I will include it here in a moment. But, first is a blog from Sideshow Press from a couple months ago.

'Work is continuing on the first release in our First Cut imprint. This series was a televised companion magazine to the collectable photographic book released by three-time Bram Stoker award winner/interviewer Stanley Wiater, and photographer Beth Gwinn.

This 36 episode television series was released in Canada on the TV Ontario network where it quickly gained a following, not only in Canada, but in the United States as well. However, it was never picked up by a US distributor, therefore, many American Dark Dreamers have only heard of the series while it made it to UK television in 2005.

If you haven’t seen it, now is your chance! If you want to watch it over and over, now is your chance!

I had first heard about the release of this DVD collection in January of 2009. I am one of those who was captivated by the original television series. So, when I heard the two year production was finally being released on DVD, I was ecstatic. I promptly pre-ordered it on Amazon.ca long before the February released date. I finally received it in mid-March. In the USA, Amazon will most likely be quicker on delivery of this product.

I spent the entire weekend watching the interviews, one right after another. I was not disappointed by any. Though, I do not remember all of them, this past weekend each and every interview proved to be a delight. The first DVD opens with Clive Barker which is one of the many highlights of the collection. Then the one on one interviews continued with Canadian writers Nancy Kilpatrick and Edo Van Belkom, both whom I met at the 2007 World Horror Convention in Toronto. Other highlights include Harlan Ellison, Wes Craven, Richard Matheson, John Landis, Peter Straub, Denice Duff and many others. Two interviews were conducted with Forrest J. Ackerman and Stan Winston, both whom have passed away in 2008. So, it was a treat to see these two industry giants on the program.

The only drawback I found was the two year series lacked interviews with Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Mick Garris, though they had been referred to in some of the interviews.

As a horror/suspense writer, this series provided inspiration for me at a critical juncture of my writing career. I found watching it again, the series provided the exhilaration and inspiration all over again. Every interview reminded me why I write in this genre. After watching the complete series, I wholeheartedly recommend this four DVD collection. It’s worth every dime.

I am also told that a whole new series could be in production in the summer of 2009. Time and resources permitting. The plans are to have King, Koontz and Garris along with many other new Dark Dreamers on the show.

For the sake of all the Dark Dreamers out there. Let’s hope so.

We’ll be waiting.

I did a quick search and do not see it for sale at the Horror Mall.

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick one here. Received word from Sideshow Press that they are accepting 'The Ghost Scare of '79' as 'The Lost Chapter' for Boogaloos. Tom said it was well written and that the tone definitely enhanced the novella and its history. So, it will now appear as part of the Deluxe Edition. A separate stand-alone story that could have been placed inside the novella or stand by itself in a magazine. This makes me extremely happy.

I'll continue to update everyone as we slither along toward publication.

Also, the book, Northern Haunts has been released. I have a slice of flash fiction in there. It is now available from the publisher, Shroud magazine, as well as Amazon.

'til later ......

Doug

BOOGALOOS & SWEET THINGS

Hello everyone,

It seems that I am posting about once a month; however it does give me the time to write or edit. This post regards the novella BOOGALOOS & the chapbook, SWEET THINGS.

The first piece of artwork has been sent to me. It is the cover for BOOGALOOS. Though, I believe Tom Moran has more to do, I am pleased and surprised by it. The cover is the first piece of many for the novella. As for SWEET THINGS, this chapbook will have the cover art started this week. Also, an artist (Meghan Hakes) that has illustrated a few of my works has been asked to illustrate the interiors for SWEET THINGS. This 10,000 word chapbook will be given to those who pre-order BOOGALOOS, whether it be the hardcover or trade paperback edition. The tales within SWEET THINGS are the direct opposite of what BOOGALOOS is about.

Once the art is fully realized for BOOGALOOS I will post them on my website.

As far as the website is concerned, I will be upgrading and adding to it over the next few weeks. That process has already begun.

So, for the time being I will be extremely busy with a new tale, the novel Barracuda, editing BOOGALOOS and my everyday life. Hope to see you around next time.

Until then,

Doug

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Hello everyone,

Hope all is well. Now that we are in a new year, I just have this feeling there will be lots of changes coming about. And that alone excites me.

We all know about my novella BOOGALOOS coming out next October by Sideshow Press. But, what I have not let out until now is there will be some extras with that book. For those that order the Lettered Edition, there will be an extra short story with it. I'll let you know more later. Also, those who pre-order, there will be another extra there too. Again, will let you know later. Not everything is nailed down just yet. So, I don't want to get to far ahead of myself.

Other than that, like I said, I am excited by the coming year. I think life for me in general will be taking a huge turn. I just have the feeling good things are heading my way. I have no idea why I feel that way, but I do. And, I hope you all feel the same about your lives. It's certainly better to be excited than depressed. I leave that for my characters!

So, until next time.

Happy New Year!

Doug

Boogaloos ->

Well, Boogaloos has been worked and reworked. It has now been sent to the publisher as polished. We shall see how polished it really is!

One thing I have to say is that last night when I sent it off, I was happy with what I had. And, that's highly unusual for me. I am not tired of the story or anything like that. I think I just realized deep down inside there wasn't much more I could do with the tale. Also, I spent very close to 60 hours rewriting it. So, to me, it is done.

I am doing a bit of reading and then in January I will return to Barracuda. Its still sitting at 80,000 words and I want it to hit 100,000 at least. Then once it's finally polished I hope to be at 80 again.

But, for the time being, I better get working on Christmas. I haven't done a bloody thing yet. Also, I moved here last October and I am far from being unpacked. Time to sink my energies into the renovations and unpacking. I hope to move from the Yukon within a couple years and need to have this place completed so I can either move back to Vancouver Island, Lower Mainland or back east to Ontario or New Brunswick. I probably won't make up my mind until the moving van drives into the yard!

Anyhow, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone. I will update here next year and it should be where I am with Barracuda.

Doug

OFFICIAL BOOGALOOS ANNOUNCEMENT

Hey everyone,

As I announced earlier on FaceBook, my novella Boogaloos has been accepted by a publisher. It will be released as a third in a series from Sideshow Press in October 2009.

There will be 100 signed copies. That is the limited edition and I believe there will also be a lettered edition as well. This book is designed for the collector’s market, and publishers Tom & Billie Moran believe Boogaloos will sell out fast.

The reason I did not mention the publisher earlier was because Sideshow Press has a big announcement coming up about their second release. And, I wasn't sure if I should announce mine before they made theirs. However, today they said I can let the world know who is running with Boogaloos.

This publisher is small press, which seems to me the only ones holding their own in these difficult economic times. And, not all of them are surviving, that’s for sure.

This company is one of a bygone era who nurture their authors, hopefully helping each, publisher and author, to achieve dizzying heights.

They also publish Black Ink Horror magazine which has printed a few short stories of mine. Actually, my tale ‘Prairie Santa’ is the lead in the massive Black Ink Horror #5 that will be out shortly. My short ‘Grannies’ was printed and illustrated for the cover of #3. And when ‘Relative Misery’ came out, it arrived with some fantastic pen and ink by Meghan Hakes in #2.

Someone asked me today what publishing Boogaloos means to me.

Here is how I see my career thus far:
My published short stories were like a gravel-road winding through the woods. Yesterday, I came to a four-way stop. So I took the paved country road with the novella. Now I am in search of the highway that could (or not) lead me to the crystal city.

I want to thank all those who wished me well with this venture. I also want to thank my cousin Lori for her fine eyes as a first reader. I need to thank Louise Bohmer for loving this story when it was still a short. It was written at a time when I had self-doubts and she swept them all away with her personal review.

The polished version of Boogaloos has to be with the publisher by Christmas 2008. So, excuse me while I get back to the editing process. I'll update everyone how things are proceeding as we go along.

Until next time.

Doug

Boogaloo Update

Hey everyone,

Boogaloos has been sent to several readers and one artist. The illustrator has shown me one sketch so far. It looks fabulous! The response thus far on the novella has been terrific. My cousin, Lori, pointed out a few things that seemed a little confusing.

I am in the process of rewriting and moving at the same time. Hopefully, I can dedicate more hours to the novella and the novel that is near completion.

Other than this, winter arrived for a little while near the end of September. However the snow vanished until a week ago. It looks as though winter is now here to stay. I was asked some months ago to write something and what started to be a novella became the full-blown novel Barracuda. So, though it is near completion I have to put it aside for the time being to get to that novella. I promised this publisher one for 2009 and I hopefully will have it ready to send in the next couple of weeks. On this website you can see the progress on both.

On another note, on the REVIEWS page you will see a couple words about my writing by Tom Moran of Sideshow Press when he was interviewed by Pete Mesling of FearFodder. As Lennon once said, or close to it: Life happens or in my case ... shit.

Barracuda still is not finished; I'm rereading it at the moment to pick up where I left off. Once that happens then it is onward to its conclusion. I have been working on different things in my life and hopefully most will be resolved shortly. One thing weighing heavily is my job or career. It seems to me I may have to make some major readjustments to my life in order to accomplish those things I need to make me happy. So, I could be leaving here or at least trying something very different to what I have been doing these past 30 yrs. A career change could be in the wind. And that may not be so bad, but it is frightening at this stage. We'll see. Everything depends on the next few weeks and where I am in relation to my life. But, for now - Barracuda has to be completed for it and myself to swim.

Until next time.

Doug

Barracuda 2

Here we are. It's been a month since I wrote anything here. It's still not spring and I haven't quite thrown away the winter coat. Though, it's not anywhere -30 to -50 anymore. The temperatures are more pleasant and the snow is melting. Unlike the places I see across the country without a trace of snow anywhere.

But, the writing has been nonstop. I am trying for 2000 words a day. Sometimes I make it, others I don't. I do try for the very least of 1000. So, it might be a little longer completing this novel. But, my aim is still the end of April for the first draft. And what I mean by the that is the sewing up of loose ends as well. That might hold me back a bit. We'll see.

Anyway, I am within 40,000 words of completion. That is to get beyond the 100,000 mark. Therefore, the editing will bring it back to the lower level for a novel of this type. I hope that I am on target enough that I can start submitting it to agents by July. I have some people wanting to be readers for this particular venture. I hope to get a couple of published authors and an editor I trust to read it as well. Anyway, I have surpassed the novella area and well into the novel range. Hopefully, by this time next month I will be finished and letting it sit and simmer for a few weeks.

Talk at ya all then.

Doug

Barracuda

I know it has been awhile. A lot has been going on and I just haven't been to my website enough. So, to update everyone. I have started a new novel. It began as a weird short story when an editor mentioned he would like to see something in Chapbook form. So, I figured the story I was writing would be long enough for a chapbook. Now I see it might have enough steam to make it to a full-length novel. It is tentatively titled Barracuda. Of course there are other names I can see on the horizon too. Like Honey-Pie. Right now I have exited chapbook length and skimming right past novella.

At the moment I am watching the snow melt and hopefully springtime will be here soon. It's a long winter in these parts and hopefully in time I will be back to an area in the country where the weather is a little more hospitable for my liking.

Anyway, have been writing a fair bit. Leaving short stories alone. I just don't feel like doing them anymore. Hopefully, my next post will have me shedding winter gear and the novella for t-shirts and a full-fledged novel in search of an agent. Until then, talk at ya all later.

Doug

Website Makeover

As most already know, my website has been revamped and it went live this morning. Have been busy working on some stories and a novel. This book is completely different than what I usually write. Most times I have campfire stories but this one is really horror I do not usually explore. We'll see how it goes.

I have a story coming up in Black Ink Horror called Grannies. This tale is again pretty weird but more in my own voice than most of mine. If I really know what my own voice is. That goes for the book above too. I am just writing to see where we end up.

Speaking of ending up, I will be moving again shortly. And at least once more within a year or so. Where am I going? Not sure yet but there are two places I would like to be, just have to decide where I would like to settle until I die. One is in the east and the other is in the west. There are pros and cons to both and they pretty much flip depending where I am thinking of going. The east will put me close to my writing and family while the west puts me in touch with my friends, weather and family. Of course if I just go to LA, Brazil or Mexico I will have only the weather and creative sources. Ahh, well. My time where I am now will be ending soon. Therefore, it is time to make a plan and stick to it.

Anyway, time to go swimming in the swamplands of my mind for another story. Talk at you all later.

Another Story

Another story of mine has been accepted by BIH for their edition of an anthology comic book. At the moment a talented lady is redesigning my site. It should be finished in a little while.

I was at the Horror convention in April and met a lot of great people. Some I had only known online and others I met for the first time there. I had a lot of pictures; however, my computer crashed and many were destroyed. Some of which are now on my Facebook.

I returned home in mid-June after the death of my mother. It was great to be back and made me wonder if I should return for good. Not that I can at the moment but maybe in time.

As for writing, not a lot on that front. Some of the stories that are to be published have been. No money there either, for those wondering how rich I've become from my stories. Anyway, time to go watch a movie or read another book. Until later.

Website

Hey everyone,
Just a short note. Not much going on here, however HUB magazine has released their latest issue in the UK. This is the first time, my name has appeared on the cover of a pro-magazine.

On top of that, as you can see on my STORIES page, several of my stories are slated to be released this year. (2007)

Also, I was asked to read a manuscript for one of my favorite authors. It's been done. Now I will send this person my breakdown after another glance at the book. And a few already have, so I will select a couple really short ones soon.

As for everything else, I am alive, I am moving ahead with my life here and I am dedicating myself more to writing than I have in the past.

Together, my dedicated readers, we will walk hand in hand through my life and fantastic tales.

Happy New Year!

Doug

ROH!

My short story ROH! has been accepted in England by HUB Magazine.
